Six Degrees of ScowlZine

So... how did we assemble this motley crew of writers at ScowlZine anyway...

Avery met Janet at the University of Hartford's Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble, a high school regional band thing. Aah... it was the spring of 1989. We got married in the summer of 1990.

Bruce, a long time friend and business partner of Stuart Glasser (Avery's Father), jumped at the opportunity to contribute to ScowlZine. We formalized the deal over beer at the Trout Brook Brewing Company in Hartford. The conversation, fortunately, was much better than the beer.

After moving back to Connecticut and starting work at his new company, Avery immediately met Jim, a Unix Systems Administrator and all around swell fellow. We've been corrupting each other with decadent lunches, good beer and fine cigars ever since.

When we decided that we were going to move back to Connecticut, we needed to find a new comic shop. We stumbled upon Chris' place (thanks to the Comic Book Locator Service) and after striking up a conversation or two (and trading some beers for some of Chris' fine honey mead) I asked if he wanted to join the project.

Back in what feels like a former life, Chris worked with a far-removed relative of Jim's (or at least we think it was a relative based on the last name). See... spooooky!

In 1990, Avery worked with this little punk kid on a collaborative web project called Illumine. After relocating to New York from Portland, Darwin contacted me after reading my plea for local writers that was placed on the front page of Scowl, Nu? for god knows how long...

Darwin and Alla. They live together. They sleep together... but based on the picture to the right, Alla bathes alone.

Alla submitted her site for entry into Illumine. Unfortunately, the other members of the review committee didn't think that a journal that discussed sex was appropriate for such an "intellectual" (read: snotty and cliquish) group. However, we think that her writing fits in with such a lowbrow project like ScowlZine.

I met Alla face-to-face for the first time last month when she and Darwin came down for a walk-a-thon in Hartford. Since then, Alla and Darwin have come to Hartford a couple of times for beer, pizza and good conversation.

Spijder has a comic book account at Chris' store.

Avery found Spijder when searching through the Open Pages Journal Registry for online journalers in Connecticut. After reading through her site, I asked her if she would be interested in signing on with ScowlZine.

Jim works with the girlfriend of one of the members of the band that Chris hated when stuck on the cruise ship with Johnny Cochran (see Chris' article in Issue #1).

After driving by a sign stating "Best Beer and Wine selection in the area", Jim decided to pull into Nick's shop to see if the selection was as good as it was touted to be.

Avery was the passenger in the car that day. And yes, he does have a fine selection of beer. He doesn't want any press, but if you're ever looking for a hard-to-find brew, just email him.

Chris and I went to see Nick to get some hard-to-obtain bottles of Scotch Whisky and Belgian Beer. Mmm... Duvel (beer) good!

When Avery was doing his five year stint in San Francisco, Carlos was his mentor at work, fellow beer drinker and cigar smoker... he is also one of Avery's closest friends. Maybe he'll actually stop by the next time he's visiting his father in New York City (guilt trip? moi?)

Ok... the only writer with no direct connection to the gang, but with all of the emails we've exchanged, he's practically one of the family... even if he lives in Manitoba!
