Cotrell's Old Yankee Ale
Pawcatuck, CT

As the regular readers of Scowl, Nu? know, I am an investor at the Speakeasy Brewing Company in San Francisco, and one of my favorite beers of all time is their Prohibition Ale.

However, after drinking my first Old Yankee Ale, I don't miss Prohibition so much. The flavors are so similar that it's uncanny. Old Yankee is one of those beers that is hard to classify. It has the strong hop flavor and crispness that is akin to an IPA, but has the slight caramel sweetness of an amber ale. It's the sort of beer that will never win an award at a major brewing festival because it's unclassifiable, but it really should.

Time to send a bottle of this beer to Eric and Forest at Speakeasy and find out what they're both doing right with this beer. (Avery Glasser)
